Electrician’s Tax Safe Plan

HMRC launched the Electricians Tax Safe Plan (ETSP) Campaign on Tuesday 14 February 2012, which is aimed at tradespeople that owe tax and are involved in the installation, maintenance and testing of electrical systems, equipment and appliances.

In addition to publicising the launch, HMRC is writing to 50,000 electricians warning them that if they owe tax then they should register by 15 May or risk being investigated.

The campaign will cover both direct and indirect taxes and states that the penalty charged will normally be 10% and certainly no higher than 20%.

The important dates to remember for the ETSP are:

  • Register by 15 May 2012;
  • Make the disclosure and arrange payment by 14 August 2012.

Electricians that fail to take advantage of the ETSP risk being investigated by HMRC and a penalty of up to 100% of the tax paid late.  It is important to remember that HMRC is tasked with a fivefold increase in the number of cases it criminally investigates so there is a real risk that in the worst cases people may be prosecuted.
