From 2015/16 married couples and civil partners will be able to transfer £1,000 of their income tax personal allowance to their spouse. This relief is only available where neither partner is a higher rate tax payer.
From 2016/17 the transferable proportion of the personal allowance will be increased in line with the personal allowance.
This measure will benefit an estimated 4 million families, where one spouse does not use their full personal allowance and will mean that the couple will pay up to £200 less income tax in 2015/16.
